In my province now when you are coming up for promotion you have to give in a sort of CV, with a covering letter from the lodge Secretary. Based on what you have done since coming out of the chair. In some lodges it is difficult to take on office as the person doing the job is very reluctant to give it up. They say you should only hold office for five years but that is not always the case. That being the case ones CV does not look good.

That's very true. Some officers keep their roles as they don't feel anyone could do it as well, but surely the mark of a good officer is to get your replacement identified and trained?

Brethren that know the right people can get rank, even past rank, when those who have devoted their life to masonry get passed over...

Well, I’m back - 10 years, almost to the day of my last post on this thread - and a lot has happened in the meantime. 6 years as ProvAGSec, 10 in total as editor of the provincial yearbook, back in as secretary of my mother lodge, JW/SW of my school lodge (to help out and allow the newer members to progress normally), DC in chapter, A&AR recorder x2, DC in Mark (and now ProvAGDC in Mark), and the biggest and most unexpected appointment, that of PAGDC in the Tricentenary awards. That I wasn’t expecting, nor do I think I deserve it even if others seem to. I gather there was a member in the north of the province who questioned it, only to be informed by one of his lodge brothers what I’d been up to (the ASec/editor roles) - I’m told he changed his mind when informed. And all of the secretary/recorder/DC jobs are on the go now - plus about to take on SE of my mother (Essex) chapter to save it handing in its warrant after 100+ years.
