brethren

I have Searched the BOC and cannot find any mention or reference of how a GM is elected. since the present one has been in office for over 50 years it's not a topic which comes up
I asked a GL officer friend and he said he doesn't know, just assumed it was a Royal appointment.

does anyone know the exact protocol for the next GM of UGLE?

No, will ask tomorrow in Grand Lodge. I presume it has always been royalty but as for electing I presume the current GM had planned for succession?
Who next?

Isn't the Grand Master elected annually, at Grand Lodge?

I suspect selection of a new GM would be delegated to the Board of General Purposes... and I'm pretty confident they will always have a name in mind!

I find it fascinating that the GM is an elected position yet no one knows how he's elected

As Peter T said, UGLE Constitutions Item 14 a nomination is made every year from a list if names put forward. As only one name has been put forward for the last 50 years, he has been nominated.
Any name can be put forward but will go to the committee to be put forward for nomination and voting.
What names are put forward when the time comes, who knows. Mine will not be there though.

thanks, now I understand the process as best as I can given the amount of secrecy involved in the nomination

Item 2 on tomorrow's agenda "Election of the Grand Master".

Two brethren will stand and propose and second the re-election of the Duke of Kent; the proposition is then put to the members present who accept with acclaim. Happens at the March QC. I imagine, when the Duke decides to retire (or dies in situ), the BoGP will put forward an alternative name (probably one of the current group of Pro/Dep/Ass GMs).

What about another Royal Blood. Prince William or Prince Edward Earl of Essex. Is there any other Royal suitable?

Prince Michael of Kent is a Brother, and quite suitable as gentlemen go.

Prince Michael is GM in Mark; it's unlikely he would become GM in Craft as well (or instead).

Good point.

That raises the question of how many of the royal names being bandied about are actually Brethren? Membership doesn’t seem as popular among them as it once did.
