Time for the 3rd Degree

One week to go and I'm very excited at the prospect of achieving MM

Hopeful that my practice proves itself during the ceremony and that my new friends in lodge will be proud if I do well

I've been to one installation during my 20 months (missed one due to work) and took a lot of pride seeing my new friends receive their offices and other recognition through the year

Freemasonry is proving a very enjoyable and rewarding journey

It is indeed a very rewarding journey for those who take it to heart. Your impending third is a major milestone on that journey and one which should give you cause to contemplate aspects of life. I will say no more except that the more times you experience that degree being worked and the more you study its intricacies, the more you will gain.

Now, think back to your second and consider very carefully the lessons of that degree now that you have a new perspective.

Also, avoid being pressured into joining other degrees or orders for a couple of years or so. You need time for all this to sink in!

Three people discussed Chapter with me - not to join other lodges or not to join at all - before and after the lodge. Talk about pressure!

I just want to read all the lectures and rituals now at leisure to understand and conjoin what I learned in each degree

Also our SW wants to compile a written ritual for each degree to incorporate our lodge's little "specialisms" to avoid everyone having to annotate their blue book and I want to help him do that as it will help me learn how my lodge does things

As you say, no pressure then!

There are so many who don't even know those lectures exist! I find that quite sad, as they miss out on understanding our current rituals.

Well done for getting involved in your lodge's ritual quirks. Having a similar problem in one of my lodges when there were continual arguments over what was 'right', I set up a panel of four and fed them with our one and two hundred year old working manuscripts to give them the necessary grounding. It took about ten years to complete the whole project, including installation/induction but now we have our own printed and hard-back case-bound books that were officially adopted by the lodge a few years ago. No arguments now! We left no wriggle room for DCs and others to make alterations. We put in a section covering General Conduct and notes for each of the offices all of which goes into great detail including such things as how deacons handle their wands, being badges of office, and so on. Remember that you have the backing of rule 155 to do your own thing.
