A lot more free evenings coming up

Postby lew finnis » Fri Mar 13, 2020 8:17 pm

Given the advice from UGLE and MMH it looks as though many meetings are going to be cancelled (sorry, abandoned!) because of coronavirus. When I looked at the age profile of my Lodge, two-thirds are over 65 and some of the others have health issues. Our meeting on 24th will probably go ahead unless any more directives come out. I have already called off an AMD meeting on 23rd as we would probably only have had 2 there (and I shouldn't be there at my age!) - the problem is that it's the Installation meeting so I have asked for further advice. We shall just have to wait and see how things pan out.

We just need to be sensible and careful.

Abandoning some meetings may be necessary - but how about Skype meetings!

There seems to be an ever lengthening list of postponements. I have to say I had never
realised just how vulnerable over 65's are apparently.

I think Skype or someting similar is an excellent idea that should be actively persued, not
least to deal with members not able to get their "meeting" fix but I imagine people will
be too busy to consider this aspect due to all the other admin which is necessary at the
moment. If time and resources do permit how would you see Skype meetings being organised,
i.e. at individual Lodge level or via the ever increasing number of social media outlets.

I wonder what effect the postponement of meetings will have on Lodges which are already
struggling. I read of one recently commenting that it was close to handing back their
Warrant due to a tiny membership of elderly members. Now, if elderly candidates/joining
members were made to feel more welcome...........

I put out an e-mail to our members this morning and so far I have had a couple drop out (sensibly) on health grounds but most of the positive replies have been from our over-65s who clearly aren't daunted. But UGLE could still pull the plug.....

I'm not at all sure, Lew, that UGLE could easily pull the plug - rule 155, you know!

This is a copy and paste of a post yesterday by a Bro who is an eminent Medical Professional:-

"In my view, freemasonry is a hobby and in view of age group of our members, all LOIs, meetings and social functions should be cancelled. Individual members may not realise the risks they are at. Even if they are prepared to catch the virus and die, they should not put others including our dear wives at risk. This is irresponsible behaviour and is non-Masonic."

Have you seen today's Tweet from Grand Lodge? The MWGM could suspend all meetings.

No, I hadn't seen that as mine was posted the day before. I could see a few of the small rural catering outfits and halls getting into financial difficulties if he were to do that.

All meetings suspended for four months with IMMEDIATE effect!

https://www.ugle.org.uk/coronavirus-member-update

My first decision as WM of a Lodge was to cancel this week's GPC... the second to cancel next week's Lodge meeting (less 5 members to open/close)... please tell me it's not always like this?

One of my Royal & Select Councils is due to meet on 18th July. I wonder if we shall be allowed to? As it's the Installation meeting I would hope it would go ahead.

Thank goodness the suspension order came through before you cancelled you lodge meeting. There is no power to cancel lodge meetings - see rule 137 B of C. If you did cancel it, the warrant would need to be returned or it would be seized and the lodge would no longer exist, it would have been erased.

Solutions:
1. If you have a quorum of five (briefly) including one installed master (of any lodge) and at least two members of the lodge itself, you could open, confirm the minutes and close quite legitimately as a 'regular' lodge meeting.
2. If there is no quorum, then you note in the minute book that the meeting was abandoned due to insufficient numbers.

Fortunately, UGLE has ordered the suspension of all meetings which effectively and officially hits the 'pause' button, so all we do is wait until they end the suspension and we are all back to normal - if you can regard what we do as normal!! This is what happened in the first few months of WWII.

Further, if you use common sense, don't hold any other gatherings - GPC, LoI, functions and ladies' nights, coach parties, BBQs. The reason is obvious.

Yes, indeed... which is why my post includes "five members to open/close" (7)

Ignoring what's happened in the meantime though, with less than 5, you could have just followed the directive about abandoning the meeting.

Our annual Provincial meeting falls inside this 4 month period; it should have been in June. It's now unclear when we'll be able to hold it -not before October at least, as we're also restricted by University of Cambridge term dates!

Keep safe everyone. I know one of my Lodge members has the coronavirus.

At least we now have admin guidance from MMH. Nothing from UGLE as yet.
