Protocol when giving addresses at installation

Postby Tazmaniac1977 » Fri May 17, 2019 8:38 pm

I have been asked to give the address to the brethren at an upcoming installation and while learning it I got thinking. I have seen it many times before and always seem to get more into it when the speaker is a bit animated. When I watched it in London the speaker you could tell was theatre trained as everyone was hung on every word, but he did move round the lodge a lot.
What I would like to know is should you remain on the spot and just use your arms or is walking around slightly ok? As it will be my first time doing this I don't want to do it wrong.

Whatever you feel most at ease doing, will be just fine. Movement does help you to remember and deliver though.

However you choose to do it, just do it with feeling - that's what make people take notice.

The best lecturer I ever saw was an OU lecturer called Lesley Smith. Her delivery was captivating - she paced back and forth. Equally, I saw a lady delivering a political address not so long ago, and she did it unscripted, paced about the stage and maintained great eye contact with her audience.

Theatre or Am Dram does help , you dont worry so much so have more time to be dramatic.

I can only say the sort of things I do. When I could remember things. These days I use Eric Morecombe workings, I know all the right words but not neccesarilly in the right order.

Hand movements need to link with what your saying. So when you refer to Brethren a wide arm sweep is OK.
When you refer to offivers you can indicate with arm and hand. Dont point tthe finger.
Similar when rfering to the Master.
Our constitution, open hands on your chest. Indicating all of us.
you can use an exagerated step. Attention stance.

Well you get the idea. Think about what you are saying and dont try to go over the top.
