My lodge fees in Essex also include dining currently £30 a meeting so £120 a year

If I went country my lodge fees would be £120 a year less but would pay £30 a meal to dine

As I full member if I decide not to dine I would not receive a £30 per meal refund

Only full members can progress through the offices

That could only be so if it's in your lodge's by-laws but I doubt that your PGM would allow such a by-law.
If this is a problem for you, then I suggest you take it up with your lodge Master and the secretary, thence to your Provincial G Sec and then to the G Sec until it can be explained legitimately.

True - but it could also be argued that country members are not in the position of being able attend regularly enough to fulfill the obligations inherent with accepting office.

Thanks Lazza
I will remember that
I just declined an invitation to MMM for ten year anniversary meeting
partly due to costs of fare to London , London hotel prices
and £50 per head dining
( mind you The Master has a commute from Pyrenees !!)

I tried. I had visited the Lodge I applied to join and was proposed by a PM of the Lodge. I didn't even get the courtesy of a reply! Vile and disgraceful behaviour - why is it tolerated? I had the pleasure of meeting Bro.Joe Morrow former Grand Master Mason recently and spoke at some length to him. He was an absolute gentleman - a stunning contrast. (I don't expect to win any friends by posting this and to the frank I could not care less)

I am delighted to be a member of an excellent lodge with absolutely perfect administration etc and outside of that have outstanding invitations to visit Lodges from Dublin to Sussex.

I agree with you Richard but practical ability is, in my view, a separate issue from what may or may not be permitted by the rules. It has been the case and practice down the years that a lodge master is known beforehand to be unable to carry out those duties, delegating them instead to an 'acting' or 'pro' due to military, parliamentary or royal duties, or to health issues. Nonetheless, he is Master of his lodge. Rule 119 covers most of the contingencies.
