FINCHLEY'S Freemason Lodge for ladies is opening its doors to the public in a bid to dispel myths about what it does.

The temple of The Honourable Fraternity of Ancient Freemasons has been in use since 1913.

In 2005 the present headquarters, Justice Lodge 4 in Finchley Road, was opened by actor Robert Powell.

The group has just completed a refurbishment and on November 22, they are inviting outsiders to come and take a look, and are keen for more members to join.

The event will be opened by Grand Master, Sheila Norden at noon.

The Honourable Fraternity of Ancient Freemasons is the smaller of the two organisations in UK for women. It was formed when it split off from the larger Honourable Fraternity of Ancient Masonry. Needless to say the similarity in names often leads to confusion between them. Honourable Fraternity of Ancient Masonry is better known as the Order of Women Freemasons. More details can be found on their website http://www.owf.org.uk/

Quite a few of the OWF lodges in Devon share temples with the men although there is no attendance permitted at each others meetings. The women use 'Universal' ritual and their craft working is basically the same as us men. I believe the only exception is the dress of the candidate, where a simple pilgrim shroud is worn. I also gather that they expect their brethren to have learnt and delivered set pieces like the tracing boards before they are allowed to progress.

OWF also has a number of side degrees and it seems to be similar to other constitutions in insisting that their brethren have to take the Mark degree before HRA, etc.
