I am in the process of re-creating my SRiS College (West of Scotland) crest.

The Rose in the centre features 18 letters and I was wondering if anyone knew what they might represent.

The Letters are AINIVPAVRAIIIVSNPA

Hi Alex,
I have the very first set of printed lectures from your college which includes a paper on the crest. I can either scan it for you,(over the weekend as I'm nightshift), or lend you the book when we next meet?

Thanks Bob

That will be brilliant as I have had no luck tracking anything down on the internet.

Hi Bob This is my take on the Crest

Image

The Outer Circle consists of the College Motto CRVX MEA LVX or The Cross is my Light and Coll: Rosic: Scot: Occid: latin for West of Scotland College.

The Inner Circle contains the 12 signs of the Zodiac: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo,Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces

From the top Right St Mark is represented by the Lion on a Red Background, St John is represented by the Eagle on a Yellow Background, St Mathew is represented by the Angel or Man on a White Background and St Luke is represented by the Bull on a Black Background.

The cardinal points North, South, East and West are symbolic of the Angels Uriel, Michael,Raphael and Gabriel who preside over these quarters. The Symbols for Fire, Water, Air and Earth are displayed on the arms of the Cross.

In the Centre Rose the letters are (clockwork from top):-

AIN SVP AVR – The Limitless Light
AIN SVP – The Limitless
AIN – The Trinity

The Crown Represents “Kether” The First Sephira

>AIN – The Trinity

That may be a later Christian gloss.

It seems to me that Ain is the same as Anu (as in Bethany - house of Anu) and Anu is the same as An and On.

And An is also known to us as the leader of the Sumerian trinity - Ea, Baal, An. (a familiar combination of sounds?)

In Sumerian "An" means heaven thus An being the most senior (most high) of the heavenly gods was just called Heaven.

An was known to the Egyptians as Holy Arch since they supposed he came from the Pole Star around which the arch of the heavens rotates.

At least that is what I have put together from my reading.

Thank you for the additional info Brother Russell.

And Eckywan, I joined the West of Scotland College because I work in Glasgow and it was much easier to get to George Square than to rush to Edinburgh or Falkirk.

I wanted to say Livingston is not a suburb of Glasgow, but most days it feels like it is. (27)

Very well done Alex. I will add the 4 classical elements on the arms of the cross.
