Just curious how nominations for active grand rank work, in particular such Officers as the grand director of ceremonies. How are these nominated, who makes the decisions?

Are you asking about Grand Rank or Provincial/Met Grand Rank? The procedures are wildly different...!

That approach would certainly save a whole lot of time spent working your way up through Provincial / London Rank!

You have to be recommended by your Prov/Met GM as a starting point, or be very well connected (to a very senior member).

I personally know one of last year's AGStB, one of this year's AGStB is also the secretary of my mother lodge, I know a former active JGD, a previous DepGDC - and the DepGM. The latter is Bursar of Queens' Cambridge, one is shortly to be Master of one of the red lodges (those supplying GStwds), 2 are members of INUL, and my lodge secretary used to drive a cab (he now works at Mark Masons Hall and is an Grand ASec of Mark).

Interesting. So the nominations are usually by a senior active member? Is there a body within UGLE that is responsible for this?

Probably - and highly likely to be attached to the Grand Secretary's office. The ProvGM is informed who's nomination has been accepted before any letters go out I believe. I've since discovered that my name was put forward along with other recommendations, but it was rejected (as the others held higher profile roles in the Province). I was finally lucky enough to receive a Past appointment as part of the Tercentenary.
