Hello from Nottingham

Postby S.C.Stevenson » Thu Oct 29, 2015 2:46 pm

My name is Scott, I am 35 and live in Nottingham. I have joined this site to learn more about the masons, its tradition and history.
I am a husband, father and son.
My interests are whisky, cigars, good food and wine. I like to travel, see new things and visit new places.

Things that fascinate me:
Masons
Religions of all kinds
History
Nature
Japanese culture
Classical music (violin)

Thanks Scott.

Thank you for the welcome chaps. Near me there are many lodges, how will I know who to approach to become a member? I do know of people who are masons but not direct friends, so I cannot really approach them.

When I talk to applicants about membership, I ask what their interests are (others with similar interests/hobbies), are they looking for an old lodge with long standing traditions or a newer, slightly more vibrant/social one. All this is to decide where they are most likely to get the most enjoyment. That's what you should be looking for.

Speak to the Provincial Secretary; he will be able to put you in contact with someone.

Welcome Scott

Whereabouts in Nottingham do you live/work? The reason being, should you wish to join a lodge, is the ability to attend in time for when the meetings start. The main masonic hall is on Goldsmiths Street, a short distance from the Theatre Royal. There are lodges that meet in Chilwell, West Bridgeford, Long Eaton, Worksop, Mansfield and Newark. Getting around the ring road during rush hour can sometimes be a bit tricky and may have a bearing on your decision.

I'm more than happy to give you a few pointers in the right direction should you wish.

Hi Richard,

I think that I would edge slightly more to “an old lodge with long standing traditions”.
If and when you make friend, the social side will come later.

Thanks.

Hi Jimmy,

I live and work in Rainworth near Mansfield.

Yes, traveling to the other side of Nottingham can be a bit of a chore in rush hour! I would like to stay over this side of the county really.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks Scott.

Hi Scott; I take your point, but speaking from the 'other side' and as a Provincial Assistant Secretary (and I'm the Provincial contact for applicants in my Province), we try to make sure that we would put you in the lodge best suited to you. Either way, if you talk to the Provincial Secretary in your area, he'll make sure you are put in touch with the best fit for you.

Hello Scott,

I have sent you a personal message with my contact details, I am a member of Pelham Lodge in Worksop which is really easy to get to from Rainworth, we are the oldest lodge in Worksop and the 4th oldest in the Province of Nottinghamshire, if you are interested in knowing more please feel free to get in touch with me. Pelham Lodge is a great lodge with ages ranging from men in their 20's to men in their 90's, we always have an excellent time together and it would be great to have another younger member join us.
If you would like to come along and visit us at a non masonic event, we have a race night at the Masonic Hall in Worksop on the 20th where you and your good lady would be more than welcome to attend. I could show you our building, the temple and your good lady could get all the ladies questions answered from my missus. Even if you decided that you didn't want to come to us in Worksop, I could put you in touch with other lodges in the Province.

Regards

Hello and thank you for all the replies.

Only this morning I have been contacted by my local Mansfield lodge inviting me to go down and have a chat and look around. I accepted and are visiting tonight!
As for the race night at Worksop, me and the wife would love to attend, so we will be getting on the phone to the baby sitter ASAP.

Again thank you.
